Thoughts from Aspen and Colten

Colten: I think that even though we are stuck indoors we can still go outside but we still have to do social distancing, which is where we have to stay 6ft apart. I also think that if social media isn't over reacting like it is, I bet that the real world is a little bit calmer. Now for the remote learning idea. I hate the idea. Yes, it protects us students and teachers from the COVID-19 but I miss my friends. Luckily, my teacher does a morning meet so I can talk to my friends that way. But yeah, I still do some sort of the same routine that I would normally do at regular school. All I know is that it is cancelled until May 1st. I hope I at least still get to school after that.

Aspen: Here is the deal, there is a weird virus going on called COVID-19 that spread all across the world, all the schools have been shut down until May 1st, we are doing remote learning for school, and today I had to give my cat a bath and it was not pretty. Twix went ballistic when we put in the tub and turned on the water. We had to close the doors on the tub to make sure she wouldn't get out , freak out, and then run all around the house. When she was done with her bath, she looked like a rat because she was soaking wet. She let me dry her and now she absolutely hates Zac because he was the one who actually gave her a bath. We gave her a treat for being a good girl and not really scratching anyone when she got out. When we were bathing her she starting howling like a dying dog, I scared me so badly that she would get out and start attacking me and Zac. This was supposed to be thoughts about the virus well here is some thoughts: All this stuff about it sucks! We have to be self isolated for a couple weeks and we need to go some places. Mom really needs to stay home because of her MS and with her medication right now isn't really helping her emun system so it can't help her fight the virus. I can't wait to go back to school and see all of my friends. I really hope that this virus dies down when we get to the summer season because I am really excited about my summer plans. That is all I have to say about this.

First week of home school for kids...stay at home order in effective....life is grand

Well not much new has been going on.  The kids started their online school experience this past Wednesday.  They seem to be doing the work part correctly but miss the interaction with others.  Colten has been able to go to morning meetings in Google hangouts where he can see his teacher and other classmates.  Aspen seems to hanging in there but I don't think she has any interactions with other students.  I think both have mentioned that they miss going to school so hopefully they have a little more appreciation for their teachers and friends.

On Friday, the governor ordered a stay at home mandate.  We have been in quarantine since there have been positive cases in the county.  So pretty much the only person who has left the house has been Zac to work.  The kids and I have been going for walks around our neighborhood.  And on Friday night, we all went for a drive up to Springdale.  We saw a deer along the side of the row along with beautiful views of Zion.  We truly live in a beautiful area.

The kids have helped cleaning up the backyard mess.  Then they have been letting the rabbits out and playing catch with them.  But usually the rabbits win until they both team up on them.

This morning we were able to have Leo and his companion come administer the sacrament to us.  It was so nice to remember the reasons why the sacrament is so important.  I haven't been very good with the Come Follow Me program with the family but I am going to try and do better.

Thank goodness for pictures that remind me of what we have done.  Zac and I picked up some cheaper white fans last weekend and had the idea to paint them :). We didn't tell the kids what the paint was for but to just pick two colors.  They did an awesome job of unknowingly matching their room.

Our family stroll by LaVerkin Creek.

Zac went into the bathroom when I said I had to go...so I knocked on the door for awhile.
Saw the girls on one of my solo walking trips.

Spring Break for kiddos...or is it???

Ok the week in recap....

Sunday - spent it out at my parents where we got to participate in a sacrament meeting.  My dad had authority from his bishop to administer the sacrament in the home since church meetings have been suspended.  Darcee, Jay, Alijah and Jeramiah were also there.  Jeramiah and Alijah were able to pass the sacrament after my dad blessed it.  Then my dad shared his testimony of the importance of following the prophet.  Aspen and I had our first go at making crepes...every one but Jeramiah liked them.  I see making those in our future for breakfasts.

Weekdays - kids were on Spring Break but with the social distancing they didn't go anywhere.  Well I take that back, they went with Zac to work.  He had the kids working on the mustang doing the tedious sanding that he didn't want to do.  Overall they did a good job since he said he would pay them if they did a good job.  It rained most of the day Thursday and Friday and the kids were going to sleep over at a friends house so Friday they weren't as good but they did get out for Spring Break.

Colten's karate got shut down by the government in light of the social distancing.  But his instructor has continued to do class virtually.  Colten said it still works.  So he is now doing karate via my Facebook.  His instructor also offered to do one on one sessions to active members...so I signed him up.  Making the most of the social distancing.  We haven't barricaded ourselves but for the most part we stay indoors and away from others.

I still worked this week as normal cause my school is already virtual but there was a shack up on Wednesday when there was a 5.7 earthquake that shook most of Salt Lake Valley.  Teachers were commenting in our chat about it, power lost....I still held class but didn't mark attendance but the students that came said it was a big one.  So yeah we are all getting told to stay home to stop the spread of the coronavirus and having earthquakes in Utah...not a normal week in Utah at all.

Friday the kids went to their friends house to have a sleep over.  Aspen went over to Audra's and Colten went over to Brody's.  Colten got picked up by Grandma since I was carless and I just got a call that they are going to watch the movie "The Miracle".  He is in good hands.

Friday night Zac and I had some much needed alone time.  We got take out from Apollo Burger and ate in our car.  Then we went to Lowe's real quick to check on fans for the bedrooms...found ones that were at least $20 less than all the other ones so we snagged a few.  Then we stopped by Sweet Tooth Fairy to get a few cupcakes.   Then Zac wasn't ready to go home so we drove around Quail Lake and Sand Hollow Lake.  We saw a full rainbow that kept moving lol.  I learned that you can go from Sand Hollow Lake into Hurricane a back way.  Had fun driving with Zac and learning about the city Hurricane.  Also learned that the place where I thought the jail was is a water treatment plant lol.  All in all it was a great night.
The snake I saw on one of my walks.

The kids learning how to use a push mower

Zac had bet Colten that he couldn't run around the block in 10 minutes.  If Zac won he wouldn't have to pay Colten the $25 he had earned for that day.  If Colten won, he won 4 scoops of ice cream.  Colten made it in 5 mins 46 seconds.  Then he wanted to see if he could do it under 5 minutes so he tried again (no reward) a few days later.  He did it!

Just having a family movie night...we watched Bumblebee.

Hollee came to pick up some groceries we got her...Oaklee trying on a Broncos helmet :)

When the kids are bored, they come up with little competitions.  Apparently Aspen does correct form push ups but Colten can hold his plank for a couple of minutes.

COVID-19, soft close and bye-bye

Those are just a couple of highlights of the past few days.  The COVID-19 or the coronavirus has taken over the world.  Starting in China a couple of months ago, it has slowly spread throughout the world, some locations more so than others.  Italy got hit hard and are currently under a 30-day lock down.  On FaceBook I have seen videos of some residents out their windows where the military is patrolling the streets in hazmat suits.  Last week, a Utah Jazz player tested positive for it, then a second player.  Only yesterday was the first positive test in Utah found through community spread.  I believe there were 3 positive tests earlier in the week but they were out of town travelers.  So on Thursday, Governor Herbert asked to limit our interactions with others....no gatherings of more than 100 people (20 for people with comprised immune systems).  After that conference, most of the colleges/universities canceled the live classes and moved them to online.  Church meetings worldwide were also suspended for at least 2 weeks to comply with restrictions.  Then on Friday, another press conference was held where the Government said all k12 schools will do a soft close for 2 weeks.  Soft close means that the school building will be open for those that need to eat, one on one learning, SPED, those types of things.  My kids are on spring break this next week so it won't impact them too much.  But I have a feeling the soft close will be extended.  Colten was sad to learn that he couldn't go to school for 2 weeks so that is nice to know that he loves it that much.  Unfortunately, my school is not affected as we are already online.  But it will be fun working while the kids are home.  The teachers will start sending stuff out two days after school resumes so teachers can prep to go to remote learning.

Then also on Friday night, I received an email stating that my principal, Angie, is no longer working at UTVA effective immediately.  I have been through all of the emotions; sadness, anger, happy, etc.  I am truly sad to see her go as she was the one who hired me and we have been through a lot.  So with the corona and her leaving and our school being a F school - this year is not one of my favs.

In other news, Colten had a soccer game on Wednesday where he got a goal, his team got 3 and they beat the other team.  If I didn't mention this in the last post here it is.  He plays 7 games total...all against the same team cause that's how many teams LaVerkin has.  But his coach is giving him skills to practice to improve so at least he is getting something from it.

Aspen had a young women's activity making crepes.  I have only had them a few times so I went and found out it is pretty easy.  So thanks Aspen for inviting me...now let's go make some crepes :). She is doing pretty good in school and keeps to herself most of the time.

Oh and Zac built a pantry and had Colten help him :)

Yesterday, Zac did a lot on the house.  Well, it doesn't sound like a lot when I type it out but really it is.  He got most of the baseboard on our long wall installed.  He was trying to figure out the transition for the carpet to the wood flooring and he worked on one strategy for a while but ultimately had to do the step method which I like.  He also rescued me in getting our bedroom blinds up (we've had them for almost 2 months but haven't installed).  Colten and I tried but were unsuccessful.  I got one screw drilled in (out of 8).  It was definitely a 2 person job (sometimes 3 or 4) cause we were standing on our bed lol.

Zac decided we needed a date night, time away from the kids, so we went to St. George.  Tasked the kids with getting our sheets on the bed along with the quilt and we would bring a treat if it gets done.  Zac and I headed to my parents to trade for the truck.  My dad was outside talking with Paula and Kirk.  Said he had a good day today which is good news.  Then we headed to Mad Pita Express for dinner...good food but not for the price.  We used a coupon but probably wouldn't go back to pay full price.  Then we walked over to the Sweet Tooth Fairy for some cupcakes aka the treat we said we would get.  Then off to Home Depot to look at toilets...aren't our dates the best :). We did get some disinfectant for wiping down the house to keep us (more particular me) healthy.  Praying it works.  Then to home...where the sheets were in the dryer and the quilt still in the washer.  Sorry kids, the cupcakes are ours.  All in all it's been a good week...now the adventure begins.
